ATTALLA – The Cherokee County Warriors broke open a tie game at halftime to take a 38-14 Class 4A, Region 6 football win at Etowah on Friday.
Keyshawn Woods led the fourth-ranked Warriors (3-1, 2-0) with 171 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Keshawn Thomas returned a kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter to help tie the game at 14. He also caught a par of passes for 58 yards.
Adam Griffith ran and threw for a touchdown. He completed 4-of-7 pass attempts for 81 yards and a touchdown to Ben Moseley.
Kayden Dobbs led the Blue Devils (0-3, 0-2) with 47 carries for 170 yards and two touchdowns.
Dobbs put the Blue Devils up 7-0 in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run. Woods responded for the Warriors with his first touchdown – a 3-yard run – which tied the game at 7 after one.
Etowah regained the lead in the second quarter on Dobbs’ 3-yard touchdown run, but then Thomas took the ensuing kickoff for a score to help knot the score back up at 14 at halftime.
It was all Warriors in the second half, as they scored 24 unanswered points. Hugh Miller connected on a 21-yard field goal to kick things off in the third, then Griffith scored on an 8-yard touchdown run to put Cherokee County up 23-14.
Griffith and Moseley connected on a 23-yard touchdown pass to open the fourth-quarter scoring. The duo also accounted for the ensuing 2-point conversion to make it a 31-14 game.
Woods scored the Warriors’ final touchdown on an 8-yard run for the final.
Cherokee County hosts White Plains next Friday. Etowah is at Ashville.
