HUNTSVILLE – Mason McAteer connected with Gavin Lang on a 20-yard touchdown pass with two minutes remaining, and Collinsville’s defense held on from there to earn a 24-21 Class 3A, Region 8 football win at Whitesburg Christian on Friday.
McAteer finished the game completing 24-of-38 pass attempts for 279 yards and three touchdowns for the Panthers (2-1, 1-1). He also ran for 138 yards on 20 carries. Lang caught six passes for 63 yards and a score.
Kyler Beene had eight receptions for 88 yards and two scores. Sylas Adams also had eight catches for 95 yards.
The Panthers took an early 3-0 lead on a 32-yard field goal by Uriel Cornejo, but Whitesburg Christian (1-2, 1-1) responded with a 20-yard touchdown to take the lead.
McAteer connected with Beene on a 10-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to give the Panthers a 10-7 advantage at halftime.
Whitesburg Christian regained the lead on a 31-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-10 lead in the third quarter.
McAteer and Beene put the Panthers back out in front on a 5-yard touchdown connection for a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter. Following a Whitesburg Christian 1-yard touchdown run that put the Warriors up 21-17, the stage was set for McAteer’s late 20-yard touchdown toss to Lang for the final.
Collinsville returns home to face Asbury next Friday.
