ALEA Mourns Loss of Beloved K-9 Bella

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is mourning the unexpected loss of one of its most dedicated K-9 officers, Bella, who passed away Tuesday, August 26, following a sudden medical emergency. She was 7 years old.

K-9 Bella faithfully served the Agency, her handler, Senior Trooper Seahorn, and the citizens of Alabama for several years. Known for her unmatched dedication, loyalty and heart, Bella played a vital role in numerous criminal apprehensions, drug seizures and the confiscation of hundreds of thousands of dollars in illicit assets. Officials credit her efforts with saving countless lives and making communities across the state safer.

Just weeks before her passing, Bella was involved in one of her most significant cases. During a traffic stop on Interstate 22 in Marion County on July 21, Bella alerted to the odor of narcotics, leading to the discovery of approximately 150 pounds of marijuana and 30 pounds of THC edibles.

But Bella was more than a working dog. She was a trusted partner and beloved member of the ALEA family, known for her gentle nature and love of people. “This is, without a doubt, one of the hardest times of my life,” said Senior Trooper Seahorn. “Not only was Bella my faithful partner, but she was also mine and my family’s best friend… She enjoyed life to the fullest and taught us to do the same.”

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor praised Bella’s remarkable career, saying, “K-9 Bella exemplified the very best of what it means to serve. Her unwavering dedication, incredible skill and genuine love for people set her apart.”

Colonel Jonathan Archer, Director of ALEA’s Department of Public Safety, echoed those sentiments, noting that Bella’s passing came during an especially difficult month for the K-9 Unit. “Bella was not just a working dog; she was family to her handler and to all of us. Her professionalism, gentle nature and spirit were unmatched, and the bond she shared with her partner was unbreakable.”

Bella passed peacefully in the arms of her handler and family, surrounded by love. Senior Trooper Seahorn expressed gratitude to the Moulton Veterinary Hospital, Wallace State College, HeavenLee Companion Aquamation, and all who offered support during this difficult time.

“Bella had a heart of gold and a love for work, but as much as she loved working, she loved people even more,” he said. “She leaves a legacy of hard work, compassion and happiness… I am grateful to have been part of her amazing life.”
