Sand Rock falls at West End

WALNUT GROVE – Alec Ashley completed 22-of-39 pass attempts for 193 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 52 yards on 15 carries with a score, but the Sand Rock Wildcats dropped to 0-2 on the football season with a 33-14 setback at West End of Walnut Grove on Friday.

West End (1-1) built a 21-8 halftime advantage. The Wildcats (0-2) trailed 14-0 at the end of the first quarter on a pair of Jaxon Hamby touchdown passes to Conner Walker and Cody Campbell. The touchdowns covered 67 and 48 yards.

Ashley pulled Sand Rock within a score on a 1-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter scoring. Ashley also accounted for the 2-point conversion run to make it a 14-8 game.

Hamby connected with Brayden Mitchell on a 19-yard touchdown pass to extend the Patriot lead to 21-8 at the break.

Ashley brought the Wildcats back within a score in the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion failed, keeping the score at 21-14.

West End put the game away in the fourth quarter on a pair of Hamby runs from 1 and 17 yards for the final.

Sand Rock opens Class 2A, Region 7 play next Friday at home against North Sand Mountain.
