Scottsboro Mourns the Loss of Retired Police Chief Ralph Dawe
Scottsboro, AL – August 14, 2025 – The Scottsboro Police Department and community are mourning the loss of one of their most respected leaders following the passing of retired Chief Ralph Dawe. Chief Dawe died on August 14, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished service and unwavering dedication to public safety.
Chief Dawe began his career with the Scottsboro Police Department in March 1989 as a patrol officer. His exceptional investigative skills quickly emerged, leading him to spend the next decade in the Detective Division, where he advanced through the ranks of sergeant, lieutenant, and captain.
In 2002, he was promoted to major, overseeing all 71 employees of the department. Four years later, in 2006, he was appointed Chief of Police — a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 2020.
As chief, Dawe was known as a forward-thinking leader who prioritized modernization. He championed the adoption of advanced technology, upgraded equipment, and enhanced training to ensure the department could meet future challenges. His leadership improved operational capabilities, strengthened officer safety, and elevated service to the community.
A highly skilled investigator, Dawe worked numerous high-profile homicide and robbery cases with diligence and determination. Over the course of his career, he received multiple commendations recognizing his professionalism, leadership, and exceptional service.
He was a proud member of the Hi-Jackson Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 35 and a graduate of the 194th session of the FBI National Academy — milestones that reflected his commitment to excellence in law enforcement.
