Overturned Truck Shuts Down Highway 9; Morning Crash Adds to Traffic Woes
Two Accidents Snarl Traffic on Highway 9 Thursday
Traffic along Highway 9 in Cherokee County was brought to a standstill twice on Thursday, with the most significant delay caused by an overturned 18-wheeler in the afternoon.
Just after 3:30 p.m., a tractor-trailer hauling carpet tile overturned on Highway 9 north of the Country Store, completely blocking both lanes of traffic. No injuries were reported in the crash. Authorities quickly set up detours, redirecting northbound traffic from the Country Store to County Road 92 and southbound traffic from Highway 35 over to County Road 92.
The highway remained shut down for several hours while crews offloaded the carpet tile onto another trailer before removing the wrecked rig from the roadway. Gaylesville and Cedar Bluff fire units assisted with traffic control, and Cherokee County EMA units were on scene as a precaution in case of fuel spillage. Alabama State Troopers are investigating the incident.
Earlier in the day, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a separate accident occurred at the intersection of Highway 9 and County Road 65, north of Centre. A Ford F-150 pickup driven by a Cedar Bluff resident collided with a 2019 Nissan Altima driven by a Rome, Georgia, motorist. No injuries were reported in that crash. Centre police and fire units responded to the scene, and traffic was briefly stalled in the area.
