John Young Appointed Chairman of Marshall County Commission

MONTGOMERY — Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday the appointment of John Young as the new Chairman of the Marshall County Commission.

A lifelong resident of Marshall County, Young brings 30 years of public service experience and a strong record of community leadership. He succeeds the late Chairman David Reed, who passed away on June 19, 2025.

“John Young is highly respected by both local officials and citizens,” said Governor Ivey. “From his background as president of a software development company to his years serving in law enforcement and as Chief Investigator of the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office, Young offers a unique blend of expertise and dedication. As he transitions to this new role, I am confident he will continue to serve with integrity and passion.”

Young expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve. “It is an honor to be asked to fill the term left vacant by Chairman Reed,” he said. “Marshall County is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. I thank Governor Ivey and her staff for the professional appointment process. I will work hard to serve the citizens of Marshall County with the utmost professionalism.”

Young’s career in public service began in 1978 as a patrol officer with the Albertville Police Department before joining the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. In 1984, he transitioned to the private sector as president of Sweda International/Innovax Concepts Corporation, a software development company. He returned to public service in 1994, holding several key roles within the Marshall County District Attorney’s Office over 30 years, including Child Abuse Investigator, Drug Task Force Commander, Investigator, and ultimately Chief Investigator.

In addition to his law enforcement duties, Young served as President and Executive Board Member of the Alabama District Attorneys’ Investigator Association and helped found several Marshall County crime victim services organizations. In 2024, he was honored as “Citizen of the Year” by the Guntersville Chamber of Commerce.

John and his wife, Karen, reside in Langston, Marshall County.

Young’s appointment as chairman is effective immediately.
