Glencoe Police Department’s K9 Kano to Receive Protective Vest Donation

Glencoe, AL – The Glencoe Police Department is proud to announce that K9 Kano will soon receive a bullet and stab protective vest, donated through the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The donation was made possible thanks to the generosity of Don and Misty Fike of Galesburg, Illinois, who sponsored Kano’s vest. The vest will be embroidered with the words: “Born to Love – Trained to Serve – Loyal Always.”

Delivery of the custom-fitted, U.S.-made protective gear is expected within the next ten weeks. This specialized body armor is certified by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and is designed to safeguard K9 officers like Kano in the line of duty.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization founded in 2009 with the mission of equipping law enforcement dogs across the country with protective vests and related support. Since its inception, the organization has donated over 6,159 vests to K9s in all 50 states, with a total value of more than $6.9 million. These donations have been funded entirely through private and corporate contributions.

The vest program is open to U.S. law enforcement dogs that are at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with their agency. Dogs whose vests have expired are also eligible. Nationwide, it is estimated that approximately 30,000 K9s are working in law enforcement roles.

Each vest provided by the organization is valued at $1,800, weighs between 4 to 5 pounds, and includes a five-year warranty. While contributions of any amount are accepted, a donation of $1,050 sponsors one full vest.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. continues to accept tax-deductible donations and also offers volunteer opportunities. More information, including event listings and donation options, is available on their website at www.vik9s.org. Donations may also be mailed to P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718. Chief Kenon McKenzie expressed appreciation on behalf of the department, stating that this gift will enhance K9 Kano’s safety and ability to serve the Glencoe community.
