Alabama Supreme Court Justice Bill Lewis Visits Cherokee County GOP Breakfast
Newly Appointed Justice Highlights Judiciary’s Role, Stresses Local Engagement

CENTRE, Ala. — The Cherokee County Republican Party welcomed Alabama Supreme Court Justice Bill Lewis as the keynote speaker at its GOP Breakfast held Saturday, July 26, at Easy Street in Centre. The event brought together local residents, elected officials, and candidates for state and local office for a morning of community engagement and political discourse.

Doors opened at 8 a.m., with breakfast served at 8:30, offering attendees time to mingle and connect. Senator Andrew Jones opened the meeting with a welcome, followed by prayer and introductions of the morning’s speakers.

Justice Bill Lewis, who was appointed to the Alabama Supreme Court in May 2025, was a featured speaker. His appointment followed a notable judicial career, including his service on the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals beginning in February 2024. Prior to that, Lewis served as presiding circuit judge for the 19th Judicial Circuit in Elmore County. Before his time on the bench, he was the senior partner of the Lewis Law Firm, which he founded in 2006, and also served as assistant district attorney for the 19th Judicial Circuit. His legal background includes experience in criminal defense, civil litigation, and family law.

A native of a military family, Lewis described his upbringing as a “military brat,” sharing how his father served during the Reagan administration. He also has a background in athletics, having played college football at Sewanee: The University of the South, where he earned undergraduate degrees in political science and economics. He later received his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law.

In his speech, Justice Lewis emphasized the importance of understanding the structure and function of Alabama’s judicial system, encouraging attendees to become more familiar with their Supreme Court justices and the judiciary’s role in government. He spoke about the challenges facing the state court system and identified a disconnect between local and state courts that he believes must be addressed. He stressed that the judicial system is strongest when citizens are informed and engaged.

Lewis also expressed his commitment to staying connected to communities across Alabama and said he plans to make regular visits to Cherokee County. He encouraged residents visiting Montgomery to contact his office, offering to arrange visits to observe the Alabama Supreme Court in action.

Also addressing the crowd was Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey, who is seeking election as Alabama’s Attorney General. Casey, who was first elected district attorney in 2010 as the youngest person to ever hold that office in Blount County—and the first woman elected to countywide office there in decades—spoke about her prosecutorial record and her advocacy for victims of abuse. She also highlighted her recent efforts to hold state parole authorities accountable and touched on the challenges she has faced in her role.

The event maintained a positive and forward-looking tone. Cherokee County GOP Chair Scott Lloyd provided updates on candidate filing requirements and reminded attendees of the party’s annual dinner, scheduled for September 29.

Justice Lewis’s visit to Cherokee County was well received, as he emphasized transparency, community involvement, and the critical role of the judiciary in ensuring a balanced and fair system of government.
