Albertville Police Investigating Series of Vandalism Incidents and Mailbox Violations
Albertville, AL — The Albertville Police Department has launched an investigation into a string of vandalism incidents that occurred around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, in the area of Walnut Street. Authorities say several mailboxes and street signs were damaged, and it is believed the suspect or suspects were traveling in a pickup truck at the time.
In what is believed to be a related incident, additional street signs and political campaign signs were later found discarded near the intersection of Whitesville Road and Kight Road. The recovered signs included those for both incumbent and opposition candidates involved in the upcoming Albertville city elections, as well as two other unrelated signs.
Police stress that vandalism and theft are serious criminal offenses that carry legal consequences. They are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Albertville Police Department Detective Division at 256-891-8222.
In a separate but related matter, the department has also received multiple complaints regarding political campaign materials being placed inside residential mailboxes throughout the city. Officials are reminding candidates and their supporters that placing unstamped materials in mailboxes is a violation of federal law—specifically 18 U.S.C. 1725.
“This federal code prohibits the use of mail receptacles for anything other than U.S. Mail that has proper postage,” the department stated. “We caution all political campaigns and individuals to refrain from this practice.”
Residents who find campaign materials placed in their mailboxes without proper postage are encouraged to report the violation to the U.S. Postal Service.
