Fort Payne Launches First Phase of Countywide Digital Radio System Upgrade

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — The City of Fort Payne has officially launched the first phase of a major digital radio system upgrade, marking a key milestone in a multi-year initiative to modernize public safety communications throughout DeKalb County.

The project aims to improve emergency response and enhance communication services for both residents and first responders. Installation of the new system began last week and reflects years of planning and coordination between city and county agencies.

Funded jointly by the City of Fort Payne and DeKalb County, each contributing approximately $2 million, the project includes the construction of a new communications tower at the north end of the county. This new infrastructure will significantly expand coverage for the city and support a broader network of public safety agencies across the region. Additional funding has been provided by DeKalb E-911 and DeKalb Ambulance Service.

The upgrades will improve the reliability and range of communications for police, fire, EMS, and emergency management teams. As part of the first phase, the city’s existing communication tower will also be upgraded. Once that work is complete, Fort Payne’s Dispatch Center is scheduled to be modernized, followed by the rollout of new mobile and portable P25 radios for law enforcement officers.

City officials emphasized that the digital radio project is a major investment in public safety and the result of more than three years of planning and collaboration among local agencies.

The digital system, developed in three phases, is expected to streamline communications across jurisdictions, reduce response times, and enhance coordination during emergencies. The upgrades reflect a broader commitment by DeKalb County to strengthen its emergency infrastructure and better serve the community.
