Piedmont Grapples with Flash Flood Aftermath, Approves Key Investments

Piedmont, AL – The Piedmont City Council convened Tuesday evening, addressing the recent flash flooding that impacted the city on Monday and approving significant expenditures for infrastructure and services.

Mayor Bill Baker reported on the aftermath of the severe weather event, stating that over five inches of rain fell within an hour, causing ditches and drainage systems to overflow city-wide. One notable incident involved the collapse of a retaining wall at a residence on Alabama Street, which will require repairs. Mayor Baker assured the Council that the city was rapidly returning to normalcy following the “brief ordeal.”

In other business, the Council approved $40,000 for the Electrical Department to acquire a new vehicle. Electrical Manager Cory Horton informed the Council that the department’s right-of-way trimming project is well underway, with substantial progress being made. The Council also approved $548,726 in bills and payroll.

Terry Baty of the Arts and Entertainment Committee provided a positive report on the recent 4th of July Celebration, highlighting the success of the event which featured a 16-minute fireworks display.

The Council also revisited discussions regarding a proposal from the Daniel Group, initially presented at the July 1st meeting. The proposal outlines a $6 million project to establish a transfer hub for industrial waste materials near the Industrial Park, on county-owned property. This development is projected to create 30 new jobs in Piedmont. Mayor Baker stated his intention to contact Don Hopper, Executive Director of the Calhoun County Economic Development Council, to further explore this opportunity.

The next Piedmont City Council Meeting is scheduled for August 5th at 5:30 PM in the Council Chambers.
