During the City Council Meeting Tuesday evening, Mayor Bill Baker informed the Council there were some issues caused by the flash flooding in the City on Monday. Baker said more than 5 inches of rain fell on the City within a hour causing all ditches and drainage areas to over flow. One residence on Alabama Street had a retaining wall to collapse which will have to be repaired. Baker told the Council things were about to be back to normal after the brief ordeal.
The Council approved $40,000 for the Electrical Department to get a new vehicle to be used in a variety of ways. Electrical Manager Cory Horton told the Council the right of way trimming project was underway with much work being completed. $548,726 in bills and payroll were approved and Terry Baty with the Arts and Entertainment Committee gave a report on the success of the 4th of July Celebration with a 16 minute fireworks show.
The Council discussed the Daniel Group’s proposal from the July 1st Meeting to bring a 6 million dollar project to Piedmont with 30 new jobs to be built on property near the Industrial Park owned by the County. The facility would be a transfer hub for industrial waste materials. Mayor Baker said he would contact Don Hopper, Executive Director of Calhoun County Economic Development Council, to further discuss the opportunity.
The next Piedmont City Council Meeting will be on August 5th at 5:30 pm in the Council Chambers.
