Cherokee County Commission Meeting

The Cherokee County Commission held it’s regular meeting today Monday, July 14th at 10 a.m. Under old business, the Commission amended the date for a public hearing regarding the vacation of a 0.78-acre parcel of land next to Slackland Baptist Church on old U.S. Highway 411. The hearing was rescheduled for Monday, August 11th, at 10 a.m.

In new business, the Commission approved a contract renewal for the Courthouse fence for $6,787 and authorized the Chairman to sign. They also approved a $15,000  Hazard Mitigation Plan Update contract with the top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments, with $5,000 allocated this year and then $10,000 planned for a future payment.

In today’s meeting they approved the hiring of Kenneth Pace as an HMT-1 at the Highway Department. In a health-related move, officials authorized a contract renewal  with Southern Health Partners to continue providing wonderful medical services. The update agreement reflects a 3% cost increase, raising the annual fee from October 1st through September 30th, 2026.

Several capital and equipment matters were also addressed. The Commission declared two vehicles from the Sheriff’s Department, a 2024 Ford Expedition and a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe as surplus, approving them for sale at an upcoming auction. Additionally, the board also approved of a 5-ton air conditioning unit for the Sheriff’s Department.

The Commission also approved an agreement concerning sharing election machines Centre, Cedar Bluff, and Leesburg. Commissioners also reviewed and accepted a bid of $1,823,364 from complete construction to work on the county animal shelter.

The meeting highlights the commissions efforts to invest in public safety, infrastructure, and operational efficiency.
