DeKalb County Man Charged with Brutal Assault Involving Vegetable Can

POWELL, AL — A DeKalb County man is facing multiple serious charges after allegedly assaulting a woman with a vegetable can, resulting in severe injuries, and later attempting to flee from law enforcement.

On Monday, June 30, deputies with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office responded to an assault call at a residence near the Powell community. When they arrived on the scene, the victim—a woman suffering from extensive injuries—was being transported to the hospital. According to court records, the woman sustained internal injuries, broken facial bones, major contusions, abrasions, and lacerations.

The suspect, identified as 46-year-old James Edward “Eddie” Wooten of Section, is accused of using a vegetable can to beat the woman during the attack. The victim remains hospitalized due to the severity of her injuries.

On Tuesday, July 1, investigators obtained a warrant for Wooten’s arrest on a charge of Assault in the First Degree. Later that day, Wooten was spotted driving a silver Nissan Altima near County Road 47 and County Road 48. Law enforcement attempted a traffic stop, but Wooten refused to pull over, leading officers on a short vehicle pursuit before being apprehended.

Wooten was taken into custody and booked into the DeKalb County Detention Center. In addition to the assault charge, he faces charges of Felony Attempt to Elude and DUI – Combined Influence. His bond has been set at $30,000.

Sheriff Nick Welden praised the teamwork that led to Wooten’s arrest. “I am so glad our Deputies and Investigators worked so diligently to hold this man accountable for his actions. Violence is never the answer, no matter the circumstances—no one should have to live their lives in fear,” Welden stated.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office extended thanks to the Powell Police Department, Powell Fire Department, DeKalb Ambulance Service, DeKalb County 911 Dispatchers, and the 9th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in the case.
