Mr. James Harper Grimes, 82, passed away on Saturday, June 28, 2025 in Rome, GA.
A funeral service will be held 6:00PM Monday, June 30, 2025 in the Perry Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Josh Bryant officiating and eulogy by Mason Bearden. The family will receive friends from 4:00PM till time of service Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will include Whitt Walker, Will Flynt, Brandon Young, Daniel Richardson, Jeff Grimes, Steve Kines, Al Young and Johnny Ray Walker. Honorary Pallbearer will include Thomas Young, Tom Garrett, Steve Garrett, All Farmer Federation Board Members, All Farmers Coop Board Members & Employees and Members Providence Baptist Church (Hwy 9).
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Charlotte Waddell Grimes, two daughters, Dana Grimes Brewis and husband Mike and Angie Grimes Bearden and husband Jason, and seven grandchildren, Karstin Ibsen and husband Cole, Kensley Brewis, Collyn Brewis, Camryn Brewis, Matt Bearden and Mason Bearden.
James graduated from Cherokee County High School in 1962 and was a lifelong resident of Centre and the Moshat community, farming cotton, soybeans and cattle. He served on the Cherokee County Board of Directors for the Alabama Farmers Federation for 30 years and on the Board of Directors of the Cherokee County Farmers Coop for many years. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church on Hwy 9.
Pops, the grandfather name he chose for himself and that his grandchildren loved to call him, was a quiet, hardworking man who was quick to lend a hand to anyone in need. He could do anything and his wise counsel was sought by other farmers for generations. He was the definition of the phrase, a good man.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Howell Cemetery Fund or a charity of your choice.
