Glencoe Man Arrested on Animal Cruelty Charges Amid Dangerous Heat

GLENCOE, AL – The Glencoe Police Department has arrested a local man on multiple counts of animal cruelty following an investigation into reports of severe neglect.

Eddie Charles Ellis Jr., 45, of Glencoe, was formally charged with eight counts of animal cruelty after officers responded to concerns raised by community members. Authorities say the animals involved were found in poor condition and have since been removed from the property. They are now receiving proper care.

Glencoe Police Chief Kenon McKenzie emphasized the department’s commitment to protecting all members of the community, including its animals. “The well-being and safety of everyone—humans and animals alike—remains one of our top priorities,” McKenzie said in a statement.

The arrest comes during a week of dangerously high temperatures across the region, prompting local officials to remind residents about the serious risks outdoor animals face during extreme heat.

“Pets can quickly suffer from heat exhaustion, dehydration, and even death if they are left without adequate shelter, shade, or clean water,” the department warned. Officials also cautioned that hot asphalt and concrete can burn the pads of animals’ feet within seconds.

The department encourages residents to take precautions to protect their pets during summer months:

  • Provide fresh, cool water at all times

  • Ensure animals have shelter from direct sunlight

  • Avoid walking pets on hot surfaces during peak temperatures

Anyone who sees an animal in distress is urged to contact Glencoe Animal Control immediately.

“Together, we can protect those who cannot protect themselves,” the department’s statement concluded.
