Strong Winds Topple Trees, Knocks Out Power Across Cherokee County
CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ala. — A collapsing thunderstorm system swept through Cherokee County Monday evening, bringing winds exceeding 50 miles per hour and leaving a trail of damage in its wake.
More than a dozen trees were reported down, with several blocking major roadways and others taking down power lines. At the height of the storm’s impact, nearly 1,600 Cherokee Electric Cooperative customers were without power.
Fire departments from Leesburg, Sand Rock, Tuckers Chapel, Cedar Bluff, Spring Creek, and Centre responded swiftly, working into the night to clear streets and ensure public safety. Cherokee Electric crews also worked around the clock to restore power to affected areas.
Local residents joined the effort, using chainsaws to help remove debris from roadways.
No serious injuries were reported, but officials remind residents to exercise caution during post-storm cleanup and avoid downed power lines.
