Tragic Head-On Collision Claims Sand Rock Man’s Life in Leesburg

LEESBURG, AL – A head-on collision on Industrial Boulevard in Leesburg on Friday morning, June 6th, resulted in the death of a Sand Rock man and injuries to a Wellington teenager. The accident, which occurred at approximately 6:23 AM near the intersection of Bristow Gap Road, closed the roadway for an extended period as emergency crews responded.

Authorities identified the deceased as 42-year-old Robby Shane Abernathy of Sand Rock. Abernathy was driving a 2014 Chevy Equinox when, according to the police report, his vehicle crossed over the center line and collided head-on with a 2014 Dodge Ram 5500 Crew Cab Utility Truck.

The Dodge Ram was operated by 17-year-old Jordan Patterson Cooper of Wellington and owned by Douthit Timber Company. Cooper sustained injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Gadsden Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Abernathy was found trapped and unresponsive in his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police report indicates that Cooper was unable to take evasive action to avoid the collision due to a guardrail in the area, preventing him from maneuvering away from the oncoming Equinox.

Rescue and recovery efforts at the scene led to the extended closure of Industrial Boulevard, significantly impacting morning traffic.
