Cherokee County Commission Approves New Hire, Updates Federal Compliance Policy During June 9 Meeting

CENTRE — The Cherokee County Commission held its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, June 9, with both the planning session at 9:00 a.m. and the regular meeting at 10:00 a.m. in attendance were Commissioners Jones (District 1), Nichols (District 2), Shaw (District 3), Teague (District 4), Commission Chairman Tim Burgess, and County Administrator Daniel Steele.

The meeting began with the Pledge of Allegiance, held in honor of the Alabama Purple Star Schools Program. The program, established by Act 2021-7, recognizes Alabama K-12 schools that demonstrate a significant commitment to supporting military-connected students and their families. Purple Star Schools help ease the challenges of high mobility for military families by meeting specific standards and creating welcoming environments. Designated schools receive a special emblem for display.

The Commission approved the consent agenda, with no awards, presentations, public comments, public hearings, or staff agency reports noted.

County Administrator Daniel Steele provided an update on the ongoing courthouse project. Details of the update are available via audio recording from the Commission.

During old business, Chairman Burgess announced the resignation of Jana Chesnut from the Cherokee County Public Library Board. Her four-year term, set to expire in February 2029, will be filled by appointment during the Commission’s next meeting on Monday, June 23.

In new business, the Commission approved a resolution to update the county’s Title VI Program to remain compliant with federal anti-discrimination requirements. The update is a routine but necessary step to ensure the county meets all federal guidelines.

Additionally, the Commission approved a motion to move Highway Department employee Jeremiah Yarbrough from part-time to full-time status, pending successful completion of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program through Gadsden State.

The next Cherokee County Commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 23.
