Governor Kay Ivey Signs Speedy Trial Act into Law
On Tuesday, Governor Kay Ivey signed House Bill 307, officially enacting the Speedy Trial Act, a key measure in her Safe Alabama public safety initiative. Sponsored by Senator Will Barfoot and Representative Jim Hill, the law aims to expedite trials for violent criminal cases, reduce judicial backlogs, and ensure swifter justice for victims.
Governor Ivey was joined by Attorney General Steve Marshall, Chief Justice Sarah Stewart, and Senator Barfoot during the signing.
Highlighting her focus on public safety, she stated:
“In Alabama, we enforce the law, and I look forward to justice being served beginning with Aniah Blanchard’s case.”
Ivey also expressed anticipation for the remaining bills in her Safe Alabama package to reach her desk when the Legislature reconvenes Wednesday.
