CAC of Cherokee County Hosts Annual “Save Jane” Event to Honor Victims of Child Abuse

Centre- On Friday, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) of Cherokee County held its annual Save Jane event, dedicated to raising awareness and support for victims of child abuse in the area. The event was held on the lawn of the Cherokee County Courthouse.

During the event, volunteers from the CAC, law enforcement, the District Attorney’s office, local schools, the judicial system, government representatives, and other community organizations came together to read the names of children who the CAC has served. For privacy, the real names of the victims are not disclosed; instead, female victims are represented as “Jane Doe” and male victims as “John Doe.”

The sheer number of names read aloud serves as a sobering reminder of the ongoing need for organizations like the CAC. While we all wish we lived in a world where such services were unnecessary, the reality is far different. In the face of this reality, the CAC provides a beacon of hope and healing for many.

The reading began around 9:30 a.m. and continued past 11:00 a.m. From 9:00 to 11:00, names representing victims from the last 25 years were read. At 11:00, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall joined the event to take part in reading the names of victims from the past year. In addition to reading some of the names himself, he delivered a powerful and heartfelt message to those in attendance. (Video of his speech can be viewed below.)

Following the ceremony, Attorney General Marshall also spoke with WEIS News and shared some personal reflections on the importance of the event and the work being done in Cherokee County.

After the conclusion of the name reading, guests were invited to attend an open house at the CAC, which has recently undergone renovations and expansions. Executive Director Lori Harris led a tour of the upgraded facility and hosted a lunch for attendees. Attorney General Marshall also took part in the tour.

During the visit, Mrs. Harris spoke to WEIS Radio News about the vital role the CAC and its community partners play in supporting students and children who have experienced abuse. (Her comments can be seen in the video below.)

Though it is heartbreaking that any child should suffer abuse, Cherokee County is fortunate to have a compassionate and dedicated network of professionals—from school staff to law enforcement, government leaders, and the team at the CAC—who are committed to helping these children heal. Sometimes a child just needs someone to hear and believe them. To have such resources who work together as a team is an invaluable gift.

Our community stands united in ensuring that victims receive the love and care they need, and that those who harm children are held accountable. With the support of leaders like Attorney General Marshall, and the unwavering dedication of local organizations, we are reminded that angels walk among us—and many of them are right here in Cherokee County.
