One Person Charged with Animal Cruelty in Chickamauga

CHICKAMAUGA, Ga. —A Chickamauga woman is facing more than 30 criminal charges after authorities say they discovered a dozen dogs and several chickens living in squalid conditions at her Walker County residence.

Renva Sue Gravitt, 58, has been charged with 22 counts of animal cruelty and 10 counts of failure to maintain responsibility for rabies control, according to a release from the Walker County government.

The charges stem from a code enforcement investigation on Gentry Drive, just west of Highway 27, where an officer was responding to a complaint about garbage on the property. Upon arrival, the officer found what officials describe as disturbing conditions, including an accumulation of feces, urine, trash, and debris.

Twelve dogs and ten chickens were discovered on the property. Some of the dogs were confined in small sheds with little to no ventilation and lacked consistent access to clean water.

“This wasn’t a one-time issue,” said Tyler Bishop, director of Walker County Animal Control. “Over 40 animals had previously been removed from this same property, and Ms. Gravitt has a documented history of citations for animals running loose.”

In light of the findings, Walker County officials have condemned the property.

Gravitt has surrendered two of the dogs and all of the chickens to the Walker County Animal Shelter. The remaining 10 dogs are currently being held by the shelter under a court order pending the resolution of the case.

If convicted on all counts, Gravitt could face up to 22 years in jail and $22,000 in fines.

Walker County authorities say this case underscores the importance of reporting suspected animal neglect and the need for responsible pet ownership.
