Swift Response by Local Officers Saves Life on Meighan Bridge
Gadsden- In a powerful example of courage and cooperation, two law enforcement officers from different agencies acted swiftly to save a life on the Meighan Bridge last month. Officer Shenandoah McInnish of the Gadsden Police Department and Deputy Jake Bell of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office were recognized this week for their lifesaving efforts.
On the morning of April 6, Deputy Bell was first to respond to a report of a distressed woman on the bridge. According to officials, he immediately engaged with the individual and worked to stabilize a tense and dangerous situation. Officer McInnish arrived soon after and brought a calm, steady presence that ultimately helped bring the woman back to safety.
Though specific details have not been released out of respect for the individual involved, both agencies confirmed that the actions of Bell and McInnish were critical in preventing a tragedy.
At Tuesday’s Etowah County Commission meeting, Sheriff Jonathon Horton formally recognized Deputy Bell for his actions. Later that day, Officer McInnish received honors at the Gadsden City Council meeting, presented by Mayor Craig Ford and Captain Jonathan Alred.
“This was a moment that showed what it means to serve,” said Mayor Ford. “It also reminds us of the strength we have when agencies work together with a shared commitment to protect lives.”
The incident underscores not only the bravery of the officers but also the importance of mental health awareness and the value of coordinated community response in times of crisis.
Sheriff Horton added, “This isn’t just about saving a life—it’s about standing together in those critical moments and doing what’s right. I couldn’t be more proud.”
The officers’ recognition has resonated across the community, sparking conversations about support, resilience, and the power of compassion under pressure.
