Summer Water Safety Tips from Atrium Floyd EMS
With warmer weather on the rise, school wrapping up, and summer just around the corner, more families are heading to lakes, rivers, and pools to cool off. We recently had the pleasure of welcoming our friends from Atrium Floyd EMS to the studio, and they shared some essential water safety reminders for the season:
Top Tips for Swimming & Water Safety
- Always swim with a buddy. Even strong swimmers should avoid swimming alone, especially in areas without lifeguards.
- Avoid alcohol or drugs before swimming, diving, or supervising others. Impairment can slow reaction times and judgment.
- Keep young children within arm’s reach. If you can’t touch them, they could be at risk of slipping under or drifting into deeper water.
- Use certified flotation devices for toddlers. Pool toys and floaties are not substitutes for approved life jackets.
- Empty unattended water sources. A cooler, inflatable pool, or even a bucket can pose a drowning hazard to young children.
- Remove toys from unused pools. Toys left behind can attract toddlers, tempting them to enter the water unsupervised.
- Designate a “water watcher.” When there’s no lifeguard on duty, assign a responsible adult to actively supervise swimmers—never assume someone else is watching.
Stay alert, stay safe, and enjoy a fun, refreshing summer by the water!
