Jacksonville State President: NPS Lease Termination at Little River Canyon Center Has Been Revoked

WEIS Radio News recently reported on DOGE cuts that were expected to terminate the lease of the National Parks Service office space at the Little River Canyon Center. The cuts were expected to close the NPS offices at the Center, while the Center itself would remain open.

The Center is operated by Jacksonville State University; JSU president Dr. Don C. Killingsworth, Jr. announced today, that the office is no longer on the list to be cut.

Jacksonville State University is pleased to announce that the National Park Service will continue its operations at the Little River Canyon Center beyond 2025. We have received confirmation that the previously announced lease termination has been revoked, and the NPS office located at the Canyon Center is no longer on the list of sites scheduled for closure.

This exciting news is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our federal delegation and state and local partners. We are grateful for their commitment to preserving this vital resource for education, conservation, and outdoor recreation.

We are especially thankful for our longstanding partnership with the National Park Service and are excited to continue our collaborative work at the Canyon Center. Together, we will build on our shared mission to provide meaningful programming, research opportunities, and public engagement that highlight Little River Canyon’s unique natural and cultural heritage.

Jacksonville State remains proud to manage and maintain the Canyon Center, and we look forward to the future of this treasured facility and all who visit it.
