BOAZ – Cherokee County High School girls No. 5 singles tennis player Sophia Hayes finished runner-up to Sardis’s Landrey Johnson in the championship match of the Class 4A-5A Section 6 tournament at Boaz High School on Wednesday. The scores were 0-6 and 2-6.
Hayes began the tournament by outlasting Etowah’s Briley Guzman in the opening round on Tuesday 3-6, 6-1, 10-4. She then defeated Springville’s Lene’ Le Roux in the semifinals 6-3, 6-4.
The Lady Warriors’ No. 2 singles player Brooke Hincy also reached the semifinals. She rallied to defeat Springville’s Katie Reisman 0-6, 6-2, 10-4, then fell to Sardis’s Jayden Johnson 1-6, 0-6.
In other singles action, Ella Maples lost to Springville’s Keira Harbison 1-6, 1-6 in No. 1 singles. Shirah Frost fell to Etowah’s Reese Causey 6-7, 2-6 in No. 3 singles. Ava Martin dropped her No. 4 match against Boaz’s Maggie Drain 1-6, 0-6, and Sarah Miller fell to Arab’s Lauren Henderson 4-6, 6-4, 9-11.
In doubles action, all three Lady Warrior pairs played in the second round.
In No. 1 doubles, Maples and Hincy defeated Oneonta’s Annie Doyal and Elorah Holland 6-1, 6-1. They dropped their second-round match to Sardis’s Callie Rae Bonds and Jayden Johnson 1-6, 0-6.
In No. 2 doubles, Frost and Martin defeated Oneonta’s Heidi Martinez and Riley Mason 6-0, 6-2. They lost in the second round to Sardis’s Taylor Johnson and Jesa Leigh Bonds 2-6, 0-6.
In No. 3 doubles, Hayes and Miller lost to Guntersville’s Emily Morris and Lorelai Teal 3-6, 6-4, 8-10.
“These girls have really improved in their tennis game this year. They really played their best tennis at the sectional tournament, and I couldn’t be more proud of that,” Cherokee County girls tennis coach Amanda Boozer said. “That’s when you really want to peak and that’s exactly what they did. We don’t have any seniors, which is exciting for next year. These girls, if they keep working hard, definitely have a chance on going to state next year.”
In boys’ action, the Warriors’ Anthony Gaidurgis reached the semifinals in No. 5 singles. He defeated Sardis’s Jonah Trentham 6-1, 7-6 before bowing out to Douglas’s Tucker Hasty 3-6, 5-7.
Colton Hopper lost to Sardis’s Cooper Sauls 1-6, 1-6 in No. 1 singles. Levi Crabtree fell to Douglas’s Garret Weaver 3-6, 5-7 in No. 2 singles. Athens Green lost to Sardis’s Colt Martin 0-6, 5-7 in No. 3 singles. Grant Garrett fell to Boaz’s Aaron Lancaster 0-6, 0-6 in No. 4 singles. AJ Lemons lost to Arab’s Tre Robertson 3-6, 3-6 in No. 6 singles.
In No. 1 doubles, Hooper and Garrett fell to Boaz’s Anderson Lambert and Isaac Faucett 0-6, 0-6.
