Gadsden State and Spring Garden Ladies Basketball Honored at Cherokee County Commission Meeting

Centre- The Cherokee County Commission held their regular meeting on Monday, April 14th. A planning session was held at 9AM and the regular meeting at 10 AM.

The regular meeting was opened with the Pledge which was held in honor of both former Cherokee County Commissioner and Probate Judge Melvyn Salter, who it was recently announced passed away, and former WEIS News Dirctor Marc Summers who recently passed as well, for their service to the community.

Following the pledge, a prayer was led by Commissioner Randy Jones.

The approval of the agenda was passed, previous meeting minutes and approved payables were also passed.

In New Business, it was approved to open an account at People’s Bank to be used for ACH and other electronic transactions and authorized the chairman and Administrator to be added to the accounts signature cards. An agreement was approved with AVENU for microfilm storage and authorized the chairman to sign. An amendment was approved to the FY 25 Budget to include activities associated with the State Crisis Intervention Program Grant. An updated job description for the Real Property Appraiser-III Position as requested by Revenue Commissioner was approved. A 2009 Chevy Tahoe from the Sheriff’s Department was declared as surplus to be sold at the next auction,.

Two resolutions were passed. The first recognizing April as National Community College Month in Cherokee County was read, and passed. Dr. Kathy Murphy, President of Gadsden State Community College was present, with representatives from the college. She made remarks following the reading and approval of the resolution, and thanked Cherokee County for their support, and for their annual contribution to the College. She also expressed gratitude for the contributions of KTH, the City of Centre, Sand Rock, and Leesburg. VP Alan Smith, Dean Andy Green, VP Tera Simmons, Dean Channel Fort, Dean Jessica Slaton, and Dean Andy Robertson were also present and addressed the Commission.  The delegation from Gadsden State Presented the Council members with umbrellas to commemorate the resolution.

A second resolution was read, and passed honoring the 2025 Spring Garden Lady Panthers Basketball Team for their accomplishments, including winning the Alabama State Title this year. Coach Ricky Austin thanked the council for the resolution and their continuous support to the success over the years of the program. He also took the opportunity to thank Gadsden State for allowing the team the use of the Richard Lindsey Arena for the County Tournament and to prepare for their games in large venues during the playoffs.

The meeting was then adjourned.

The Next meeting of the council will be on Monday afternoon of the 28th.
