GADSDEN – The Cherokee County Lady Warriors finished runner-up to Plainview in the gold bracket of the Gadsden Umpires Tournament on Saturday. They finished the tournament going 5-1, including 3-1 on Saturday.
The Lady Warriors opened the day against West End. Emma Hill fanned 16 batters, including her 800th career strikeout, in leading the Lady Warriors to a 1-0 victory. Hill allowed no runs on three hits with a walk to earn the win.
Kaylee Lewis drove in the only run of the game with a ground out in the fifth inning. Sydni Frost, Journie Cabe and Sofie Dawson each collected a hit for the Lady Warriors.
Against Pisgah, Dawson delivered a walk-off, two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Lady Warriors to a 6-4 victory.
Hill once again earned the win. She allowed three runs on 10 hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts in eight innings. She also singled to tie the game at four in the bottom of the seventh inning and had three hits with two RBIs.
Cabe also had three hits and Dawson drove in two runs.
The Lady Warriors then defeated Southside 5-3. Cabe, Dawson and Izzy Patterson each collected two hits for Cherokee County. Dawson had a triple in the third and a two-run double in the fourth. She finished 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.
Bristol Bass earned the win for the Lady Warriors. She gave up two earned runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
In a 7-0 loss to Plainview, the Lady Bears broke a scoreless tie on Faith Odom’s three-run homer in the fourth inning.
Brooklynn Bruce, Frost and Lewis each contributed a hit for Cherokee County. Hill suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
Cherokee County jumps back into area play at Alexandria on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
