Rome-Floyd Fire Department is Asking People not to Burn as Arson Cases are Investigated

The Rome Floyd Fire Department is asking for people to not burn today. Weather conditions currently favor the rapid spread of wildfires. Multiple fires have forced the department to seek assistance from other local agencies.

This comes in the midst of two cases of suspected Arson in the area that led to wildfires.

Ainsley Sutton, 22, had warrants issued for setting a fire in Armuchee that put homes in danger on Sunday.

Arson is also suspected in a Tuesday fire near Highway 411 that showed irregular burn patterns that would be consistent with an intentionally set fire. That fire is still under investigation.

No injuries have been associated with the fires, but at least one home sustained damage.

This comes as fire crews in North and South Carolina struggle to contain fires that have forced evacuations and strained resources there as well. The fires at the Table Rock State Park in Pickens County and Persimmon Ridge in northern Greenville County have been burning for six days. The Table Rock Fire nearly doubled in size Wednesday, measuring 4,556 acres. The Persimmon Ridge Fire grew to 1,553 acres Wednesday.

Efforts to fight the Carolina fires have been hindered due to damage in an area that is still attempting to recover from hurricane Helen.
