The first Alabama Sports Writers Association softball and baseball poll of the season was released early Thursday morning, and several area teams are scattered throughout both sets of rankings.

In softball, Class 4A Cherokee County (12-2) comes in at No. 5 and Class 1A Spring Garden (6-4) debuts at No. 9.

In baseball, Class 2A Cedar Bluff (10-7) and Class 3A Collinsville (11-4) are both ranked eighth in their respective classes. Other baseball teams nominated for the initial rankings are Cherokee County (9-10), Piedmont (4-5) and Spring Garden (8-5).
