The Alabama House of Representatives passed a bill introduced by Rep. Danny Garrett that will reduce the sales tax on food from 3% to 2%. Some lawmakers have made the argument that the food sales tax is unfair since food is deemed as a necessity. The bill passed the house with no opposition.
The bill will now make its way to the Alabama Senate and if passed and signed by Governor Ivy the tax cuts will go into effect in September. The cut is estimated to save Alabama taxpayers over 100 Million dollars yearly.
