Man Killed in Crash Fleeing From Local Deputies

On Monday morning, Feb 24th, a Cherokee County Deputy attempted a stop on a Chevy Camaro. The driver of the vehicle ran, and a pursuit was initiated. The chase traveled along Alabama State Route 20, towards the state line and Floyd County, GA.

During the chase, the deputy lost sight of the vehicle at some point after it crossed into Georgia. He turned around past the state line, and when coming back the other way, discovered the vehicle that had crashed, when attempting to navigate a curve in the road. The vehicle had struck some fencing, and erupted on fire.

According to the Georgia State Patrol “The investigation determined that the Camaro was traveling east, negotiating a curve to the right, went off the left side of the roadway. It struck a ditch with its front and continued east along the ditch before striking a culvert. The impact caused the Camaro to vault over a driveway and strike several fence posts. It overturned several times before ejecting the driver and coming to rest, fully engulfed in flames.” The driver was pronounced dead.

Specialist from the Crash Reconstruction Team of the GA Highway Patrol are investigating the accident. The name of the deceased has not yet been released. We will continue to investigate this story, and update if more information becomes available.
