Alabama’s 14th severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, and ends at midnight, Sunday, Feb. 23, allowing Alabama shoppers to stock up tax free on common supplies costing less than $60 that every home and business needs to prepare for a natural disaster or even a general emergency.
Generators costing $1,000 or less also can be purchased free of the state’s four-percent sales tax during the three-day tax holiday.
The tax-exempt items include the following priced at $60 or less:
- Batteries
- Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
- Cell phone charger
- Duct tape
- Fire extinguishers
- First-aid kits
- Flashlights, lanterns
- Tarps and plastic sheeting
- Tie-down kits, bungee cords or rope
- Two-way radios
- Manual can openers
- Other tax-free items include: coolers, ice packs, plywood, smoke/fire/carbon monoxide detectors, and window film.
- Portable generators and power cords costing $1,000 or less are also tax free.
