Governor Ivey Signs What Is A Woman Bill

Governor Kay Ivey Thursday afternoon signed Senate Bill 79, the “What is a Woman?” bill. Bill sponsors Senator April Weaver and Representative Susan Dubose joined Governor Ivey in her office as she made it official with her signature. The Bill had previously passed the house vote 77-12. “In Alabama, we have common sense. We know what a woman is. We know that God created us man or woman, that our sex is fixed and determined at birth,” said Republican Rep. Susan Dubose.

The new law simply defines sex based on reproductive organs that are present at birth. This makes Alabama the 10th state to pass such a law, with many others with legislation in progress to do the same.

Many who supported the bill believe it is an important base to help ensure the safety of women, and to protect female athletes from being forced to compete against men.

The governor issued the following comment:

“If the Good Lord made you a boy, you’re a boy. And if He made you a girl, you’re a girl. In Alabama, we believe there are two genders: Male and female. There is nothing complicated or controversial about it. Today, I was proud to officially answer the question “What is a Woman?” with my signature on Senate Bill 79. It did not take a biologist to figure it out. Thank you, Senator April Weaver and Representative Susan Dubose for your work on this.” – Governor Kay Ivey
