Subject Dies of Self-Inflicted Gunshot Following Pursuit Sunday

Following a high speed chase on Sunday, one subject has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Fort Payne Police.

Chief David Davis released a statement stating that the chase began around 7:30 p.m., when a Fort Payne Police Officer conducted a traffic stop on Glenn Boulevard SW before the driver drove away.

After striking another vehicle on Interstate-59, the driver led police along County Road 85 and AL Highway 40 before losing control of the vehicle, leaving the roadway, and striking a metal pole while turning from AL Highway 117 onto U.S. Highway 11.

As officers approached the crash scene, two passengers exited the vehicle and stated that the driver was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the course of the pursuit, a Fort Payne Police Officer was involved in a single-vehicle accident with non-life-threatening injuries.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was also involved in the pursuit. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by Jacksonville State University’s Center for Applied Forensics and and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
