The Oneonta community is mourning the loss of Malikih Montgomery, a former football and basketball star, who was currently playing football for Huntington College as a freshman. Montgomery was a standout defensive back for the Redskins, who won All County and Region awards in 2023. Oneonta’s Head Football Coach Phil Phillips said Montgomery had been loved by his team.
The two-vehicle accident occurred in the Summit community of Blount County. at 12:09 AM Sunday. The call came in that there was an accident, with entrapment and two vehicles on fire. Blountsville Fire and Rescue responded, along with mutual aid from other units from Cullman County. Both vehicles were off the road and on fire.
Two others whose names are currently unavailable were injured and transported. One victim was lifeflighted from the area, and a second was taken for treatment by ambulance. Montgomery was declared dead on the scene. The accident in currently under an investigation led by the Alabama State Troopers.

Oneonta City Schools Superintendent Craig Sosebee stated that mental health therapist and counselors would be made available to students upon returning to school Monday for those that would like to talk with them.
