Ider Shooting Update From DeKalb County Sheriff

From the Office of DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden:

FORT PAYNE, Ala. — — On January 14th 2025, at approximately 11:26 pm Dekalb County Deputies, along with Officers with Henagar Police Department and Ider Police Department, responded to Red Bud Drive in Ider in regards to a female victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound. This victim was identified as Cheryl Rhodes (47 of Fort Payne). Also present on scene at Red Bud Drive was Rhonda Kay Correll (62 of Ider) who was interviewed by Investigators with the Dekalb County Criminal Investigation Unit. Rhonda Correll was able to confirm to investigators that Rhodes had been shot at 352 Woodland Drive and she had then transported Rhodes to Red Bud Drive in order to get help. Rhodes was transported to an area hospital by Dekalb Ambulance Service and was in stable condition as of January 21, 2025.

Information was also gathered by Investigators that a domestic violence incident had led up to the shooting of Rhodes and that a male, Jacob Lee Correll (33 of Ider), had been present on scene and involved in the domestic incident when Rhodes and Rhonda Correll had left from 352 Woodland Drive.

Due to the nature of the call, The Dekalb County SRT team was then mobilized and responded to that address on Woodland Drive in order to set a perimeter and secure that scene.

While SRT members and Investigators were securing the perimeter and conducting a callout at that residence, Jacob Lee Correll was contacted by SRT members in a vehicle behind the residence. An Officer Involved Shooting then occurred as a result of Corell’s actions that were a direct threat to the lives of SRT members.

Correll then attempted to flee the scene in the vehicle and was apprehended by SRT team members. Correll was given immediate medical attention once located and apprehended. He was then transported to a hospital where he was treated and released to custody and was booked in to the Dekalb County Detention Center on multiple outstanding felony warrants.

Per Dekalb County Sheriff’s Office policy, the officer involved shooting scene was secured and then processed by Investigators from an outside agency along with Crime Scene Analysts with Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics. Investigators from this outside agency will be investigating the officer involved shooting portion of this incident.

After interviewing Jacob Correll, Rhodes, and Rhonda Correll as well as processing the scene and gathering evidence, Dekalb County Investigators determined that Jacob Correll and Rhonda Correll had been struggling over a firearm, which resulted in Rhodes being shot.

Probable cause was found to charge Correll with Domestic Violence 2nd, Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, Resisting Arrest, Attempt to Elude, and Attempted Assault 1st (x2).

Jacob Correll is currently being held in the Dekalb County Detention Center on these charges as well as numerous property crime charges related to a Burglary in Ider.

A warrant was also issued for Rhonda Kay Correll for Assault 2nd Degree and she was arrested on January 23, 2025, and booked into the Dekalb County Detention Center.

DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden said of the incident: “DCSO Deputies, Investigators, SRT and Officers with Ider and Henagar Police Departments worked tirelessly in sorting through all of this and to bring closure to this case. I am thankful the injuries both victims sustained were not life threatening and also grateful there were no other injuries.”

 “God Bless!” Concluded Sheriff Welden.
