The Spring Garden Lady Panthers have company at the top of the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball rankings, and it’s the Panther boys.
Spring Garden (17-0) moved up three places to take the top spot in Class 1A, while the Lady Panthers (21-1) maintained their top ranking on the girls’ side.
The latest rankings — the first of the new year — were released early Thursday morning.
Spring Garden isn’t the only area team to move up to begin the new year. The Sand Rock Lady Wildcats (13-5) moved up two spots to No. 3 from the previous poll, as did the Wildcat boys (11-8), who are now ranked sixth in Class 2A.
In Class 3A boys, Piedmont (9-4) enters the poll at No. 8, while Cherokee County’s boys (7-4) move up a notch to No. 9 in Class 4A.
Other area teams nominated include Cherokee County’s girls (15-2), Cedar Bluff’s girls (10-6) and Collinsville’s boys (11-4).
