Bitter Cold Conditions Expected Friday Stay Warm and Be Prepared

Wind chill values will reach their coldest point Friday morning, especially across the northern half of Central Alabama, where 10-15 degree wind chill is likely with low temps 17-20 degrees.

The actual low temperatures for northern and eastern counties will meet hard freeze conditions (<20 degrees) and the proper steps should be taken for this situation.

Dress in layers: Wear several layers of loose-fitting clothing, rather than one bulky layer. Wool, fleece, and down are good choices for insulation.

Protect your extremities: Wear a hat, gloves, and scarf to keep your head, hands, and neck warm.

Stay dry: Wet clothing loses its insulating properties, so avoid getting wet.

Limit your time outdoors: If possible, limit your time outdoors in cold weather.

Be aware of the signs of hypothermia and frostbite: Hypothermia is a condition in which your body temperature falls too low. Frostbite is a condition in which your skin and underlying tissues freeze.

Check on elderly neighbors and relatives: Make sure they are safe and warm.

Have a winter emergency kit: Your kit should include a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, food, water, and a warm blanket.

If you must travel, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

We want to encourage everyone to check on those that may not have adequate heat sources, the elderly and those that have health conditions. Minimize your time outdoors.

Keep a check on your pets. Keep them indoors, dry and warm as possible. Ensure they have plenty of food and water and make sure it doesn’t freeze. If they’re going to be outside, try to keep them bundled up if possible.

Make sure to insulate your pipes as much as possible. Open up sink cabinets to expose pipes to heated air. Make sure to disconnect outdoor hoses and turn off water to sprinklers.
