Spoiler alert for Alabama folks: not among places with sightings is the northeast Alabama town of Fyffe, where 35 years ago (before the reporting center began) a report set off a frenzy of strange sightings and which each year celebrates the UFO Days festival.
Interest in UFOs in that small DeKalb County town began with a UFO reported on Friday, Feb. 11, 1989.
A woman made the first call to the Fyffe Police Department, reporting she saw a strange object in the sky. By the end of the next day, more than 50 residents had reported seeing the strange objects, including the town’s police chief and his assistant.
The object was described by a witness as hovering “at an angle from 1 o’clock to 7 o’clock with bright lights at the top and bottom. The curvature was outlined in green with ”a real bright light in the center.”
Data for the National UFO Reporting Center list encompasses all reports of UFO sightings dating back to 1995. Sightings with locations listed across multiple cities were not included in this analysis.
For now, the U.S. government’s official stance is that extraterrestrial life does not exist. But if the last century is any indicator, that will do little to curb America’s alien obsession.
