Alabama Governor Kay Ivey Says She Has ‘No Plans’ to Deploy Alabama National Guard to Birmingham

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey states that she has “…no plans” to deploy the Alabama National Guard into Birmingham – following the mass shooting outside a Five Points South loungeA spokesperson for the governor made that statement Tuesday night.

Although the governor “…has NO plans to deploy the National Guard, she does stand willing and ready to work with Birmingham – to combat their ongoing crime – just as we’ve been able to do throughout the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit here in our Capital City,” – that according to Gina Maiola.   Maiola was responding to those comments made by State Representative Juandalynn Givan, who said the city, may have “no choice”, but to receive assistance from the National Guard IF there is a “catastrophic” event that “taxes” what she has characterized as “Birmingham’s understaffed Police Department.”

In an interview with AL.com Tuesday night – Givan said that her National Guard comment was misinterpreted – and that she meant that the guard would be available should the city need it.

We’ll continue to follow this story should any developments come forth.
