SECTION – The Section football team was unable to keep Sand Rock from pounding the rock Friday night.
Led by Kane Robison’s big night, visiting Sand Rock ran its way to a 35-6 Class 2A Region 7 win at Section Stadium.
It was Sand Rock’s fifth straight win over the Lions.
Robison went 70 yards for a touchdown on just the second play from scrimmage to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead after the first of Morgan Tucker’s four extra points.
After a short Section punt into a stiff wind, Sand Rock (3-1, 1-0) took advantage of the good field position, turning it into a 6-yard Alec Ashley to Gavynn Cunningham touchdown pass and a 13-0 lead midway through the first period. Robison’s 33-yard touchdown run and Ashley’s two-point conversion pass to Cunningham then gave the Wildcats a 21-0 lead after one quarter.
Sand Rock held a 28-0 halftime lead thanks to Gatlin Cox’s 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Robison closed the scoring for the Wildcats with a 1-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
Robison finished with 176 yards on nine carries with three touchdowns for Sand Rock. Cox ran for 58 yards on 15 carries and Brendon Lindsey added 51 yards on six carries.
Section (1-3, 0-2) got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter, using an eight-play, 83-yard drive that concluded with Zack Cooley’s 3-yard touchdown run with 8:22 left in the game. The scoring drive also included runs of 32 and 33 yards by Cooley, who rushed for a season-high 106 yards on 11 carries. Aaron Thomas was 5 of 11 passing for 83 yards for the Lions while Landon Vaught had two catches for 62 yards.
Sand Rock hosts region foe Pleasant Valley on Friday. Section hits the road for a region matchup at Cedar Bluff.
