Leesburg Needs Police Car and Police Officer
The Leesburg Town Council approved the hiring of a new police officer. The applicant can be a Certified officer or Un-Certified. The Town will send the officer to the Police Academy if they hire someone with no experience. The department is also in dire need of a patrol vehicle. The current ones in operation are experiencing air-conditioning issues and one is currently in the repair shop. The Council approved to accept bids on a new Chevy Tahoe for the department – also, Mayor Pierce informed the Council the department has a 2021 Ford with 60,000 miles on it, but it is “junk”. He asked the Council to declare it as surplus property, to be sold as is, with the equipment on it except for the radio. This measure was approved.
Fire Chief Joe Sonaty asked for the Council to approve the purchase of an EV or Eclectic Vehicle, blanket; the device is to be draped over an electric vehicle fire to smother it out. Those fires can’t be easily put out with just water – and he also asked for a “shut off plug” which is used to disable an electric vehicle that’s been involved in an accident – to prevent electrical fire. The Council approved both for approximately $2,400.
The Town received a good financial report from the most recent audit – Which reflected the Town only had $9,500 in long term debt – with good income and money in the bank. Mayor Brandy Pierce informed the Council the maintenance position for the Town is now open – and the Council approved hiring someone to fill that vacancy.
The Council approved a sewer holding tank ordinance – which would be utilized in the easement areas around the lake. Mayor Pierce told the Council this document is similar to the County’s. And the low bid of $450,819 was approved for the Town’s paving of eight streets. The mayor told the council he didn’t know when the work would be done, but he hoped it would be soon.
The next Leesburg Town Council meeting will be October 7th. at 5:00pm.
