Social Media Post Sparks Fear at Cedar Bluff School

Last week, a Cedar Bluff School student apparently made a post on SnapChat that raised concern by many. Over the weekend, the situation was brought to the attention of school administrators and the school resource officer.

Sunday evening, the school made a post to Facebook acknowledging they were aware of the “social media chatter” concerning the issue and that administrators and the SRO have investigated the matter, but did not provide further details.

Superintendent of Cherokee County Schools Mike Welsh sent WEIS Radio News this Statement today (Monday):

“We are aware of inappropriate comments made last week by a student. The comments have been, and continue to be, investigated by school administration and law enforcement. There has been no threat to the safety of our schools.  School safety is, and always will be, our top priority.

Social media chatter has contained some false statements that have caused alarm. While we understand being concerned in light of recent events in our neighboring state, we do encourage you to look for official information from our schools or contact our schools directly for information.

We are extremely thankful for the community concern for our students. The safety and well-being of all students will always be our top priority.”

There are additional security personnel at the School today. In addition to the SRO, Cedar Bluff Police and County Deputies are providing assistance.

When WEIS News reached out to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s department, we were referred to their “social media page” for an update, which stated, “The student involved will be disciplined through proper school policies and criminal charges could subsequently follow. While the investigation continues, we don’t believe there to be a threat to the school in connection to this report. However, as an extra precaution, additional Sheriff’s Office personnel will be on campus.”
