Man Facing Speeding and Drug Charges

A man recently pulled over for Speeding in Northwest Georgia – has now been arrested on drug charges.

According to a report from the Chattooga County Sherriff’s Office, the 45-year old man was pulled over this past Sunday, at Scenic Hill Road due to excessive speeding.    The deputy that had pulled him over, clocked him at 65 mph, in a 45 mph zone.

The driver – Charles Smick – told the deputy that his “instrument cluster lights” didn’t work so he was not aware that he was speeding.  While that deputy continued talking with Smick, he detected the smell of marijuana emitting from the vehicle.   Smick then admitted to smoking marijuana – when he was in Alabama.

The deputy then requested the Trion Police Department to help assist him with the stop and the standard field sobriety tests.  During Field Sobriety Testing conducted by the Sheriff’s Office Deputy, in addition to Trion Police Department Officers, they noticed he was having a hard time correctly performing the tasks that the assessment required.  During the testing, the vehicle was searched, and in it the deputy found 3 plastic bags of marijuana, 2 pipes containing marijuana residue, and also  other drug related objects.

Smick was placed under arrest – and charged with DUI/Drugs, Speeding and Brake Light Requirements.
