Phone Scam Hits Etowah County – Also Cherokee County

The Etowah County Sheriff’s Office – has received reports of “Scam Phone Calls”, from individuals pretending to be a representative of the Sheriff’s Office in an effort to solicit money, much as we’ve seen HERE in Cherokee County.  The person falsely identifies themselves as either being a local Deputy or Investigator from the Sheriff’s Office and may use a real deputy’s name.

The caller may allege that you have warrants for unpaid tickets, missing court, jury duty or outstanding fees.  They will THEN ask for some sort of payment over the phone – and they will often “spoof” or fake their phone number so the call APPEARS to be coming from the Sheriff’s Office – OR – a similar government agency.

As a reminder, the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office nor ANY Sheriff’s Office will ever call and ask you for money over the phone, as a means to collect any payment OR threaten you with legal action.

If you are ever unsure if the caller works for the Sheriff’s Office – you can always hang up, and call them back at one of the many official numbers – Etowah County is (256) 546-2825 – and here in Cherokee County you can call (256) 927-3365.

Help share this information with friends and family members to prevent them from falling victim to this, and other, similar scams.
