Historical Marker Unveiled In Cherokee County

The Coker Ford Historical marker was unveiled at Cornwall Furnace Park Saturday with members of the County Commission, Park Board Members and Park Manager, Director of the Chamber of Commerce, Stacie Hathorne with the Alabama Historical Commission, Brian Rushing, Director of Economic Development at the University of Alabama and Matt Gates, Director of Archeology at the University of Alabama.

This marker is to recognize the Coker Ford Site which is part of the Alabama Trail of Indigenous mounds in the State. The actual site is in the mouth of Little River. The mounds there were excavated by a group of archeologists in 1960 before Weiss Lake was backed up. There is a rock mound there today which marks the area.

This ancient village site dates back to 700-1100 AD which is part of the Woodland Period. The findings from these ancient sites tells the story about our ancestors of how they lived, thrived, and traveled.
