UPDATE / Fort Payne Teen Dies, Another Injured in Car Crash During Police Chase

A Fort Payne teen was killed Saturday morning, in a one-vehicle accident – while being pursued by police in neighboring DeKalb County.  The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has identified that victim as Cody W. Ashley, age 19.

The crash happened at 2:49am on DeKalb County 248, two miles south of Fort Payne, according to ALEA’s Official Release.  Ashley was fatally injured as the 2020 Nissan Maxima he was driving, left the roadway, struck a utility pole and a tree, and overturned.  Ashley was pronounced dead at the scene; a 16-year-old passenger in the Nissan was injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Ashley was being pursued by an officer with the Fort Payne Police, at the time of the crash, according to law enforcement officials.  Authorities did not release any information on the reason for the pursuit.

The investigation is on-going by Troopers with the ALEA Highway Patrol Division.
