Child Drowns in Cherokee County Over the Weekend

Emergency personnel were called to the scene of a missing person in the Hopewell Community near Leesburg at around 5:30pm Saturday.

According to the information reported to Cherokee County 9-1-1, a brief search of the immediate area was performed for the missing 3 year old child before calling 9-1-1 for help. 

Following an extensive search by emergency personnel, the child was located in the water of Weiss Lake around 6:50pm. Atrium EMS Medics attempted to perform life saving measures – and the child was rushed to Atrium Floyd-Cherokee Medical Center in Centre.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office – the child sadly died at the hospital.

The Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency, Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Leesburg Police and Leesburg Fire, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Marine Division and Atrium Floyd EMS responded to the scene.
